Overview

The story behind the INEOS Grenadier range is just as interesting as the vehicle itself. An English billionaire was disappointed that Land Rover wouldn’t sell him one of the previous-generation, boxy Defenders, so he went out and created his own. The INEOS team was tasked with building a modern interpretation of a classic, embracing the original platform and suspension setup while adding a pair of BMW engines and a slick ZF automatic transmission atop modernising some key areas of the cabin. The end result is a unique and highly capable 4x4 off-roader that certainly isn’t afraid to get its toes dirty.

There is so much to like about this plug-in hybrid version of the Sorento. Everything new here only adds to an already great seven-seat SUV. That unfortunately includes the tall price, and with some drawbacks when it comes to charging you will have to have a garage spot to charge it up to make the most of it. Those early adopters who fit that criteria, and are willing to take a chance on a car with such a hefty price, will be rewarded with a brilliantly packaged, lovely-to-drive and semi-premium seven-seat offering.

But that aside, it’s an excellent alternative to the diesel for those who do mostly urban and suburban driving, and certainly strikes me as more fit-for-purpose than the thirsty (front-wheel-drive-only) V6 petrol. Beyond the drivetrain, the Sorento is one of the best ‘5+2’ seat SUVs out there, with good road manners, a fantastically up-to-date interior, and resolved design. Well worth a look…
